Black Bears: There are an estimated 1,500 to 2,000 black bears in the Smoky Mountains. Here is some helpful hints you need to know about black bears when you are on vacation in the Smokies.

Never feed or approach bears. Feeding bears is illegal in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, it is a federal offense that can result in up to $5,000 in fines and six months in jail. Additionally, Tennessee law criminalizes intentionally feeding black bears.

Secure any food, pet food or garbage and never leave food outside. Most rental properties are equipped with bear proof trash containers.

Lock your vehicles at all times and remove any food from the vehicle. Bears can open vehicle doors and if they get locked inside they can destroy a vehicle trying to get out.

Gatlinburg Harvest Festival

To fully embrace the fall season, the City of Gatlinburg is expanding Smoky Mountain Harvest Festival beginning mid-September through late November. The extension of the Harvest Festival offers visitors more time to plan a trip to the Smokies during the peak of the fall season.

This year, we are inviting visitors to weigh in on your favorite displays in the Smoky Mountain Harvest Festival “People’s Choice Award.” As you visit town, take note of the gorgeous decorations and vote for your favorite.
Gatlinburg Winter Festival & Chili Cookoff

Get ready to bundle up, sip something warm, and feel the magic in the mountain air because the Annual Gatlinburg Winter Festival & Chili Cook-off is back and on the Parkway for a celebration that’s as heartwarming as it is dazzling!
As twilight falls, downtown Gatlinburg transforms into a sparkling wonderland, glowing with over one million twinkling LED lights that dance across the night sky. Take a stroll along the Parkway from Mountain Mall to Gatlinburg SkyPark and take in the sights, sounds, and scents of the season. This street-style festival brings live music and entertainment, where the rhythms of the holidays echo through the crisp mountain air. Let your inner child run free at the ice skating rink, giggle your way through the whimsical inflatable maze, and warm your heart with the carolers spreading cheer along the way.
Don’t miss the Christmas Tree Farm and Photos with Santa, where twinkling lights and merry smiles make memories, you’ll cherish forever. All along the Parkway, you’ll find carnival games, festive photo ops, and even a giant inflatable snow globe that feels straight out of a storybook.
And of course, no Gatlinburg celebration would be complete without something to take home — browse cozy event sweatshirts and t-shirts, perfect for remembering your magical mountain night.
