Black Bears: There are an estimated 1,500 to 2,000 black bears in the Smoky Mountains. Here is some helpful hints you need to know about black bears when you are on vacation in the Smokies.

Never feed or approach bears. Feeding bears is illegal in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, it is a federal offense that can result in up to $5,000 in fines and six months in jail. Additionally, Tennessee law criminalizes intentionally feeding black bears.

Secure any food, pet food or garbage and never leave food outside. Most rental properties are equipped with bear proof trash containers.

Lock your vehicles at all times and remove any food from the vehicle. Bears can open vehicle doors and if they get locked inside they can destroy a vehicle trying to get out.
